[Blog] May the Bidding Commence
Written by StuartFrost on Wednesday, 22nd Jun 2011 11:24

With Sunderland starting the bidding for Connor Wickham late last night, will the price for the young talented striker rise and rise, or will the phones be very quiet at Portman Road as the transfer window kicks in to full swing?

Connor Wickham has been seen as one of England’s greatest talents who is expected to grow into a class player. Ever since Wickham made his debut for Ipswich Town when he was just 16 years and 11 days, he has been looked upon by scouts, managers and players themselves as a great potential for English football.

He has attracted attention from many Premier League clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and now Sunderland, who have placed the first bid for the 18-year-old at £8 million.

All through this season just gone by clubs have been impressed by the level that he can play at and the goals that he has scored. Most memorable were the wonder goal against Sheffield United and the hat-trick against the 6-0 thrashing of Doncaster.

But just how far will these big name clubs go to get their hands on one of Ipswich’s greatest assets? Many rumours were flying around about offers in the region of £10-£15 million coming from Liverpool, but Jewell dismissed these claims, saying that he hadn't had any bids at all for Wickham on the 13th June.

I believe that this £8 million offer for Wickham will just be the start of the bidding war that will continue over the summer, as more clubs will most likely get involved to buy this high potential player and clubs are prepared to pay vast amounts of money for players who just have ‘potential’. Just recently Phil Jones completed a transfer to Manchester United for what is believed to be nearly £20 million.

Everybody is looking to the future, looking for younger players, but is the extravagant amount of money spent on young players really worth it when there is no guarantee that they will actually prosper to what they are expected to? Yes. There is so much money in football these days, the big clubs can afford to splash £8 million here and there, because in five years time that player may be worth triple that and that player may be the leading goal scorer in the Premier League.

The clubs have to take risks and most of the time it pays off. Connor Wickham is a hugely talented player, but just how far will the big clubs go this time to grab another of England's future talents?
